Earthquake: The vibration of earth produced by a rapid release of energy within the lithosphere(Crust and Uppermost Mantle).
Epicenter(point on surface where the earthquake happened) is measured by a travel time graph, data from seimograms(record of ground motion) at 3 different locations on the earth can be used to determine an earthquakes epicenter.
Magnitude:
Richter: Based on the height of the largest seismic wave recorded on a seismograph. A tenfold increase in wave height equals an increase of 1 on the magnitude scale.
Movement Magnitude: Calculated using the average movement along the fault, the area of the surface break, the strength of the broken rock, and seismogram data.
